Lesson FAQ’s

  • Why are you lessons so much cheaper than other dance studios?

We are able to offer lessons at discounted rates because all of our teachers are Assistant Teachers, the majority of whom are paying us to study at Ballroom College. Think of our studio like the Aveda School, where you can go and get a discounted haircut because you’re receiving the service from someone who is learning - supervised by a teacher.

  • How much do lessons cost?

Group classes are $55/person for a 4 week session.

Private lessons can be purchased one at a time or in packages:

    1-4 lessons: $85/lesson

    5-9 lessons: $80/lesson

    10-19 lessons: $75/lesson

    20+ lessons: $70/lesson

  • Can Assistant Teachers really teach?

Assistant Teachers are some of the most enthusiastic teachers you’ll ever meet because they’re sharing what’s new and interesting to them.

Do they have the teaching ability of say a master teacher or a lead teacher? Absolutely not, but It’s also important to note that your lesson is simultaneously a lesson for the Assistant Teachers, which means there’s always a lead teacher available for backup if your teacher gets stumped.

  • Will I always have the same teacher?

The short answer is “yes” and “no.” We will attempt to schedule you with the same teacher, but you may take lessons from various teachers during your time training with us.

We may have you change teachers because a specific teachers needs to teach a step or pattern that you are scheduled to learn next. This works because each lesson is supervised by a lead teacher and the Assistant Teachers are working from the same syllabus - set of steps - so the transition from one teacher to another is seamless.

Additionally, the lead teacher is really the person responsible for all the lessons that occur at the college (like an attending physician at a hospital supervising residents), so he/she will make sure you’re well taken care of.

  • Do you offer refunds?

We do not offer refunds for any service once you have paid.

  • What’s your cancellation policy?

We have a strict 48 hour cancellation policy for all lessons and group classes. We do not make exceptions to this policy.

If you cancel within 48 hours, the scheduled lesson will be marked as “attended” and you will lose that lesson.

For group classes, we do offer two make up classes throughout the month, but you must cancel the class in your Ballroom College account and sign up for the make up class.

  • How long are private lessons and group classes?

Our private lessons and group classes are all 45 minutes long. Through years of experience, we’ve discovered that anything longer than 45 minutes can lead to brain fog and anything less is simply too short.

  • Is Ballroom College BYOB?

We are BYOB! However, we do not provide glassware or bottle/wine openers.

  • Do you have a dress code?

Our Assistant Teachers have a dress code: dark jeans, Ballroom College t-shirt and dance shoes. We do not have a dress code for students, but we do have some requirements:

    1) Shoes must be clean and dry to enter the dance floor.

    2) No sandals or flip flops allowed.

    3) Please wear shirts or dresses that have sleeves, even if short sleeves. No tank tops allowed.

  • If I’m getting married, how many lessons should I take?

We’re a dance teacher school that has a 194 hour curriculum for learning to teach the basic steps. That being said, we’d like to say 194 hours is a good starting point, but we understand there are limitations on time and finances.

10 lessons (a total of 7.5 hours of instruction) is really the minimum to get ready for your wedding. However, if you have less time, we can show you some basics.

What’s most important to us, and your learning, is for you to have consistently (weekly or bi-weekly) lessons.

  • How regularly should I take lessons?

Our Assistant Teachers attend classes four hours a day, four days a week. While we wish our students could dedicate this much time, we understand this isn’t realistic.

We recommend a consistent schedule of once or twice a week. Skipping weeks or coming once or twice a month isn’t ideal. You’ll need to relearn information. In the end, you’ll spend more time and money learning to dance and the experience won’t be as much fun.

  • I’m getting married, how early should I start taking lessons?

The earlier the better. Six+ months out is the sweet spot, that way you have plenty of time to learn and practice.

When we start getting a month or two out, the stress levels go up and the to do list gets longer and this really isn’t the best time to learn a new skill. Ideally, a month or two out you’ve already got most of your dance learned and your polishing things up and working on performing.

  • Does Ballroom College offer open practice times?

We do offer open practice times. They’re $12 for each 45 minute slot (up to 2 people) and can be scheduled via Wellness Living.

  • Is there parking out front?

There is plentiful free(!) street parking along Ravenswood Ave. Because it’s free, it often fills up when the Cubs are in town, so keep that in mind for your planning.

  • Are you near public transit?

We are about a block away from the Irving Park stop on the Brown Line and roughly a mile from the Ravenswood Metra stop.

  • What if I have no dance experience?

The vast majority of students coming to our college to learn to dance have zero previous experience. We’re well versed at starting from the bare basics. In fact, breaking dance down so that it can be understood by complete newbies is a huge part of our curriculum for our Assistant Teachers.

  • Do lessons expire?

All lessons expire after one year from the purchase date. If you are unable to use your lessons, you can contact the studio manager to discuss transferring the lessons to someone else for a $30 transfer fee. This decision will be made at the studio managers discretion.

If you have purchased 60+ lessons at one time, your lessons will expire after 18 months.

We do not offer refunds for unused lessons.
